Abandoned Milking Shed

abandoned milking shed

Bedford County at one time used to be a dairy stronghold with numerous family farms dotting the area, each one having some cows to milk. Today there is only but a tiny fraction of those farms left who are still hanging on and still producing milk. I made this drawing while passing by the milking shed of what was once an old family farm, now long expired, and the original owners long dead. No telling how many cows passed thru nor how many buckets of milk collected (or kicked over by a cantankerous bovine) in there when it was active. Today it sits in a lonely back corner of Bedford falling in on itself. A quiet reminder of Bedford’s farming history and heritage.
