Black Swallowtail Butterfly

Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly

Butterfly drawings are always a pleasure and swallowtails make a prime subject for any artist.  Swallowtail butterflies are pretty common in my area and a sure sign that summer is here.  We have several different species native in my neck of the woods, all of them hefty sized butterflies and exquisitely colored. This one happens to be a Spicebush Swallowtail, a large, black swallowtail butterfly that’s easily recognizable and strikingly handsome. I picked this guy up off the middle of the road where he had already expired a few days ago. I brought him home to my studio where I set him aside till I had a chance to draw him. This butterfly sketch of mine really doesn’t do him justice but you can still get an idea of what he looks like. For the purposes of this blog I typically draw in black and white only (my specialty) but one can’t truly appreciate the beauty of these insects in just black and white. So I added a bit of watercolor to give you a visual treat and to better appreciate the beauty of these iridescent flying flower suckers.
