Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly

Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly

Swallowtail butterflies are pretty common in my area and a sure sign that summer is here. We have several different species native in my neck of the woods, all of them large sized butterflies and exquisitely colored. This one happens to be a Spicebush Swallowtail, a large, black, and strikingly handsome butterfly. I picked this guy up off the middle of the road where he had already expired a few days ago. I brought him home to my studio where I set him aside till I had a chance to draw him. This picture really doesn’t do him justice but you can still get an idea of what he looks like. For the purposes of this blog I typically draw in black and white only (my specialty) but one can’t truly appreciate the beauty of these insects in just black and white. So I added a bit of watercolor to make a more accurate picture of quite a beautiful bug.
