Hard At Work

My funny black and white cartoon of a creepy scarecrow keeping guard over a cornfield with some crows. Drawn by artist Bryan Skinnell.

Already this summer is puttering to a stop like an ancient, wheezing push-mower and I don’t like it one bit. I love summers and everything that comes with the package. And I sure had some high hopes for this round. I really did. I wanted to spend more time on my art and writing. I had every intention of devoting more time and energy to my social circles and growing those out as I continue figuring out new and novel ways of meeting people, building connections, and making new friends. I had blocked out time to devote to more reading which I’ve largely neglected this year. And, last but not least, I sure looked forward to enjoying more fun and frolick this summer. Unfortunately I didn’t get much fun or frolick or book reading or art because I stayed busy from dawn to dusk doing my best impression of a busy guy. And what do busy guys do? They mostly stand around, sit around, lay around, and screw around. You know, the important stuff that makes life worth living. Hooray me!! I ought to include that in my artist statement sometime. It’s due for an update. And that riff at least sounds better and is more apt than my current artist statement which reads, “Bless this mess dear Lord!”.

Unfortunately my blogging and comics took the hit from my negligence and wound up neglected and forgotten like litter on the highway. There’s a lesson in that folks. Never neglect what’s important to you. Or what’s important to your fans. Because if you’re too darn busy to draw a funny comic for their daily pleasure they get kinda cheesed at you. And there’s few things worse than a beloved fan who feels stilted only because you forgot all about them and failed in your artistic duties to deliver their daily funny. Which will surely keep them mad and cranky for the rest of the week. Not unlike the girlfriend who swears you don’t like her anymore even though you told her a ten thousand times plus one that you love her more than ever. And then buried her under a truckload of rose petals and chocolates, all in a fruitless attempt of appeasing her and making her happy. But of course she ain’t having it…. and neither will your fans and faithful readers! Armeggedon is coming for the forgetful artist so let me just say, here and now, that I’m sorry folks! I really am. I haven’t forgotten you and I’m back to blogging and drawing again which should cover each and everyone of you for the remainder of the week. But between us we both know you don’t have anything better to do anyway than to read this nutty blog of mine. Otherwise you’d be goofing around and screwing around just like me! Perish the thought.

Why hello there! My name is Bryan Skinnell and I am a middle-aged (50-ish) artist and neighborhood kook who is living the artistic and creative life out in the boonies of Bedford, Virginia. Bedford is one of the largest counties in the commonwealth of Virginia and, for the most part, it’s still a mostly rural one that bridges the gap between Roanoke and Lynchburg. You could say, in more ways than one, that Bedford is the heart of Virginia. I can’t argue with that although I usually think of Bedford more as Virginia’s belly button myself.

I grew up right here in Bedford and have lived and toiled most of my life on our infamous red clay. The sort of clay that makes the stickiest mud known to man after a rain and which clings like super glue from God to anything and everything it touches. If you are so foolish as to get it on yourself you’ll wind up tracking and leaving a trail of red goop everywhere you go for days afterwards to the delight of your family and friends. But I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else and Lord knows I tried as I’ve wandered from one end of the country to the other. But Bedford has my heart and that’s where I’ve chosen to live my life today. In my free time when I’m not stuck in my studio making art I do love being outside gardening or hiking or just pestering the neighbors.

Every day I try to write something that’s original, entertaining, and half-way thoughtful here on my blog while sharing my happy-go-lucky attitude and zest for life. Quite often I don’t have the foggiest notion of what I’ll end up saying in a post. But, whatever I end up writing about, I do hope you enjoy it!

I do keep a mailing list for interested readers and fans. If you would like to get in on the action and follow my musings and rabble-babble, that can be easily arranged. Just give me an email address that you would like for me to send my blog posts to and I’ll see that you get it.

Thanks for stopping by!
