Call me hopelessly naive (and I won’t mind if you do because I’ve been called way worse; like Beany!) but when I make art I make it on the presumption that someone… somewhere…. is actually going to like it. If I’m not mistaken I do believe there’s an official scientific term for that unfortunate medical condition. It’s universally referred to as being gullible. And I freely admit to being gullible! Why I’m so knowledgeable on the subject I could write a bestseller on how to be gullible. And that tome would be so darn thick and beefy that it would give your eyeballs a hernia just looking at it. I’d get busy writing it too if my agent wasn’t such a cad and didn’t think I was so darn gullible.

Well now that my dark and dirty little secret is out and will surely be splattered all over the news for everyone to see, I may as well run with it. Some twits might would consider my gullibility a surprising fault and even a potential character flaw on my part. And maybe it is. But, for better or for worse, I’m just a simple-minded fool who automatically trusts that people are good and kind souls who want to make the world a better place and who appreciate the finer things in life. Much like I do. And that’s why I make art. I do it to make a statement and a positive impact. And I’m hopeful that it does. Once in a while someone will even let me know just how my art has made their day, God bless ’em! So I can’t be the only gullible fool running around out there. I can personally attest there are other like-minded rubes wanting to see and believe that life truly is better than it seems.

So take heart dear readers, your art, your hard work and your good vibes was not in vain. I promise someone, somewhere actually did get a rise out of seeing your art and your contribution. Even if they didn’t have the decency and good manners to tell you that it did. And that’s not just mindless gullibility on my end saying that. That’s the gosh darn truth! So go out and make something just for the heck of it. You never know what might happen or who might see it. And when they do they will smile and quietly acknowledge that maybe the world isn’t quite the mess it is. Either that or people are just more gullible than ever. And frankly I can’t blame them.

Why hello there! My name is Bryan Skinnell and I am a middle-aged (50-ish) artist and neighborhood kook who is living the artistic and creative life out in the boonies of Bedford, Virginia. Bedford is one of the largest counties in the commonwealth of Virginia and, for the most part, it’s still a mostly rural one that bridges the gap between Roanoke and Lynchburg. You could say, in more ways than one, that Bedford is the heart of Virginia. I can’t argue with that although I usually think of Bedford more as Virginia’s belly button myself.

I grew up right here in Bedford and have lived and toiled most of my life on our infamous red clay. The sort of clay that makes the stickiest mud known to man after a rain and which clings like super glue from God to anything and everything it touches. If you are so foolish as to get it on yourself you’ll wind up tracking and leaving a trail of red goop everywhere you go for days afterwards to the delight of your family and friends. But I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else and Lord knows I tried as I’ve wandered from one end of the country to the other. But Bedford has my heart and that’s where I’ve chosen to live my life today. In my free time when I’m not stuck in my studio making art I do love being outside gardening or hiking or just pestering the neighbors.

Every day I try to write something that’s original, entertaining, and half-way thoughtful here on my blog while sharing my happy-go-lucky attitude and zest for life. Quite often I don’t have the foggiest notion of what I’ll end up saying in a post. But, whatever I end up writing about, I do hope you enjoy it!

I do keep a mailing list for interested readers and fans. If you would like to get in on the action and follow my musings and rabble-babble, that can be easily arranged. Just give me an email address that you would like for me to send my blog posts to and I’ll see that you get it.

Thanks for stopping by!
